They were supporting a worthy cause which would improve the well-being of disenfranchised segments of the American public and provide more of a voice to the people as a whole in their effort for greater autonomy.

Starting with Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, and others of the folk revival, as well as some soul artists like Sam Cooke, sociopolitical commentary became much more prevalent in popular music, and the rock movement soon moved to incorporate it. Countless artists including the aforementioned Joplin and Hendrix, The Beatles, MC5, The Velvet Underground, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and The Doors proceeded to include more serious subject matter in a number of their songs and became outspoken about important issues offstage. The Allman Brothers have emerged in today’s world as one of America’s most popular and influential rock bands in history. The first came on the scene during the 1970s, when they blended a mix of blues, country, jazz and classical that was highlighted by traditional southern rock. After releasing Eat a Peach not long after At Fillmore East, Berry Oakley was killed in a motorcycle accident only blocks away from where Allman died.

Despite the difficult times, the Allman Brothers surged onwards and they developed a new sound with the release of Brothers and Sisters (1973). Containing the massive hit “Ramblin’ Man,” the record went onto occupy the number one spot on the charts for six weeks. Once again, the members of the Allman Brothers displayed their creative genius and ignited further interest among fans, eager to eavesdrop on their well crafted tunes.

Then, trouble brewed again, as disagreements between bandmates ensued, and the band broke apart in 1976, only to rejoin two years later. They endured label difficulties and changing times and were forced to re-examine their sound. Fans needn’t have been worried, however, because after a long hiatus in the 1980s, the band formed together once more in the early 1990s and have been recording and touring since.

Progressive Metal

Where Progressive Metal Came From

Back in the 1960′s and 70′s in the beginning of Progressive metal. High Tide was one of the first metal bands to start mixing some of these other elements into their metal music. Rush and King Crimson started to experiment with their style of music and start to become a more progressive metal type band. There was a start for progressive metal, but it needed someone to push it to the next level. There were three bands that could do that. Queensryche, Fates Warning and Dream Theater all had their own ideas and inspiration for progressive metal These three bands really had some progressive rock influences that gave them a more edgy and extreme metal sound.

The Breakout

Progressive metal started to breakout in the community in the early 1990s. This was all because of Queensryche’s Silent Lucidity, which became a huge hit in stores, on the radio and on MTV. With this spike in popularity, this paved the way for more progressive bands to come out. This opened the doors for other bands like Ayreon, Threshold, Opeth, Pain of Salvation, Symphony X and Tool. All of these new progressive bands all had a different style and inspiration for their music.

New Styles and Trends

More and more bands started to go with this trend. This metal genre needs some new leaders and new styles of music. For the present time we have Conscience, Disillusion and Dark Suns. Most progressive metal bands have always looked up to Anathema, Pain of Salvation, Opeth, Green Carnation and Tool.
