The Byrd Dynasty in Richmond Virginia

Richmond is built upon an area originally used by the native Powhattan tribe and they built their own capitol here, also known as Powhattan. The English arrived and established Jamestown close to the area but the land upon which Richmond is built always held an attraction – it was the highest navigable point upriver before the rapids prevented navigation and was a strategic point for both defense and trade.

Enter William Byrd I, an Englishman from Shadwell in the darkest depths of East London but in 1673, he was granted lands around the falls on the James River. He established himself quickly and by hard work, using and building on his already-envious Indian trade connections. In 1704, his son, William Byrd II, inherited the lands and business and continued in his father’s footsteps.

The enterprise was highly successful and in 1737, Richmond was established at the Falls of the James River. The town was named after Richmond in England (itself now a part of London), which is situated on the River Thames – Byrd felt that the view of the James River was very similar to that of the Thames in London, hence the name; Richmond. By 1742, the town layout was completed and Richmond was incorporated in 1742.

The Byrd dynasty was firmly established by dint of fortune and hard work in the founding of the city and interweaving themselves into the trading and political fabric of society. A testament to how closely the Byrd family tied themselves to the machinery of the state is epitomized by the Byrd Organization, known also simply as “the Organization”. This was the vehicle used by Harry F. Byrd, himself a US Senator and a Governor of Virginia active in the first half of the 20th Century.

Harry Byrd established himself politically by engaging with the five main offices in principal counties of the state – the Sheriff, Clerk of the Court, Commonwealth Attorney, County Treasurer and Commissioner of Revenue. It was these “constitutionally elected” offices who effectively controlled which candidates would stand for election and by drawing these officials into Byrd’s political orbit, it became impossible for any candidate to gain election in Virginia without the “nod” from Harry Byrd. Although succeeded by his son as State Senator, the Organization effectively had its grip on state politics broken in the 1960′s over issues such as racial desegregation and disenchanted voters turning to liberal

Richmond today is littered with landmarks to the Byrd family and their influence upon the city. Probably the most enjoyable is the Byrd Theater on Cary Street. Providing movie tickets and old style film-going experience in a faithfully renovated old time theater, you can enjoy a real treat on Saturday’s when the giant Wurlitzer organ is played before the performance. For those prepared to drive a while, perhaps the most fitting monument to the influence of the Byrd family is to be seen in the Shenandoah National Park where one of the three visitor centers is named after Harry F. Byrd himself.

Septmber 2nd night will always remains close to the heart of Detroit fans of Eminem. Eminem along with Jay-Z performed a mind-blowing show at Comerica Park. The fans of Em’s were bestowed with the wonderful music waited since years. People commented this as an exuberant musical treat.

Jay-z and Eminem extracted the best at the show that was adorned with many surprise guests.Juvenal Gutierrez a local resident said that “the return of Dr.Dre send a number of ladies into agitation”. Dr.Dre enthralled a bunch of girls who went to the extremes, when he came out from the stage. Gutierrez also stated the joy to see D12 back together.

Anthony Crachiola, a big fan of Eminem was very excited to see him performing. Two other music lovers, Sara Ohle and Gioviani Villannava celebrated their birthdays at the show. They are from Riverside and Corona, California. They travelled across the distance to see the performers of the show and were over-whelmed to attend the function. Ohle, even missed her flight from the West Coast. but she managed herself to reach Detroit on time for the show. This shows the excitement of people to see Eminem performing in his home town after a break of few years.

Another Em’s fan Edward Richardson says that the night is worth remembering in the heart of every Eminem fan in Detroit. Eminem really raised his fans up in the air with his wonderful music. He enthralled his home town fans with lovely music. Jay-Z also did a big job worth remembering. Eminem concluded the show with a rocking performance. It is Eminem who usually finish the show.

The show on Thursday night in Detroit was the first among the two sold out shows of Eminem and Jay-Z. Even on Friday show, more visitors are expected. The demand for eminem jay z tickets is huge.

Bob Marley was born at Nine Mile in the north central part of Jamaica. He was the son of a white English naval officer and a black Jamaican mother. The three formed the reggae group known as The Wailers. It was also during this time in Kingston Town that Bob Marley and the Wailers became Rastafarians, which was a major influence on Bob Marley’s lyrics and music for the rest of his life. In 1973 Bob Marley’s music became world famous when the Wailers were signed to Island Records, and Eric Clapton’s rendition of Bob Marley’s song I Shot the Sheriff became a number one hit in America. The albums Catch a Fire in 1973; Natty Dread in 1975, and Uprising in 1980 made Bob Marley a legend.

Bob Marley also was an ambassador and spokesman for racial harmony, world peace, and Jamaican political unity. His political work led to a close assassination attempt in 1976 in his home in Kingston, which is now the Bob Marley Museum. Since his death in 1981 due to cancer at age thirty-six, Bob Marley is revered as a Jamaican national hero at all inclusive beach resorts throughout the island and as a unique musical genius throughout the rest of the world. The Bob Marley Museum is a celebration of Bob Marley’s music and his life. His former studio has been made into a theater and exhibit hall. His bedroom is kept precisely as he left it. Other exhibits present media coverage of Bob Marley’s life and display his platinum and gold records. The museum is decorated with colorful Rastafarian banners, and a statue of Bob Marley has been erected in the museum’s garden. The museum gift store offers a complete collection of Bob Marley’s music and memorabilia of every kind.

Whoever is listening to a Hendrix vinyl, Janis Joplin song-set, or Dylan record is quite possibly going through an experience that is much more than the sound. It is not about only listening to well-executed music; it is about remembering the capability of humanity to resist oppression and those who would endeavor to infringe upon fundamental liberties.

The 1960?s was among the most momentous periods in the history of the nation. The Cold War was in full effect, and the Civil Rights Movement was taking off and reaching its apex. The United States had metamorphosized into a huge world power, and many did not accept this idea. They envisioned that the country should be like a beacon of hope for the remainder of the world, and present an example of tolerance and justice.

Born out of these beliefs was a new angle in rock and roll music. The movement, although often being associated with rebellion, had not had much of a political component before. Now, given the zeitgeist, rock musicians, especially those relatively new to the scene, became much more invested in promoting ideas of ?responsible? rebellion; their mission was rebellion not solely for rebellion?s sake, but for an important revolution.. They were supporting a worthy cause which would improve the well-being of disenfranchised segments of the American public and provide more of a voice to the people as a whole in their effort for greater autonomy.

Starting with Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, and others of the folk revival, as well as some soul artists like Sam Cooke, sociopolitical commentary became much more prevalent in popular music, and the rock movement soon moved to incorporate it. Countless artists including the aforementioned Joplin and Hendrix, The Beatles, MC5, The Velvet Underground, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and The Doors proceeded to include more serious subject matter in a number of their songs and became outspoken about important issues offstage. Music and musicians? statements dealt with civil rights, anti-war efforts, feminism, gay rights, the environment, and drug use and implicit calls for legalization. By the finish of the decade, the rock movement had become closely intertwined with counterculture in a way that it had not been before, and this paved the way for the attitudes of many future rock groups and subgenres like punk and metal.

When hearing a vinyl record from an artist or group of the 1960?s, one is usually taken back in time to this defining era. It could seem as though they are suddenly in the midst of protests and other components of the turbulent environment of the time. Although that period is long past, those who were part of it and fought for the basic rights of mankind, including many musicians, are undying and will never, ever be forgotten.

The Allman Brothers Band Tickets – The Big 4-0

The Allman Brothers can’t lie about their age anymore. The iconic band is celebrating 40 years this year and these southern rockers are not showing signs of aging in the least bit. They plan to start the birthday celebrations big by heading to New York City’s recently renovated Beacon Theatre for a 10 gig marathon that is scheduled to start on March 9. The group is currently comprised of Gregg Allman, Butch and Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, Jaimoe, Oteil Burbridge and Marc Quinones. Fans are only too thrilled to turn out in support of the band, since they had to cancel their Beacon Theatre residency last year when frontman Allman took time away from touring to focus on treatment for Hepatitis C. The Allman Brothers Band has played at the historic venue an impressive 175 times since 1989. The Allman Brothers have emerged in today’s world as one of America’s most popular and influential rock bands in history. The first came on the scene during the 1970s, when they blended a mix of blues, country, jazz and classical that was highlighted by traditional southern rock. Their self-titled album attracted good reviews from critics and the group soon had a cult following of fans, eager to latch onto their particular brand of music. At the time of their formation the group included: Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Forrest Richard Betts, Berry Oakley, Claude Hudson Trucks and Jaimoe Johanson.

The album Idlewild South further emphasized the band’s sound and the record contained one of their most famous signature hits, “Midnight Rider.” Some consider the compilation of songs that appeared on the tracklist to feature some of the Allman Brothers’ finest works. While the Allman Brothers enjoyed massive success with their music, they were not as fortunate when it came to avoiding tragedy. In 1971, Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident just two weeks after the release of At Fillmore East. After releasing Eat a Peach not long after At Fillmore East, Berry Oakley was killed in a motorcycle accident only blocks away from where Allman died.

Despite the difficult times, the Allman Brothers surged onwards and they developed a new sound with the release of Brothers and Sisters (1973). Containing the massive hit “Ramblin’ Man,” the record went onto occupy the number one spot on the charts for six weeks. Once again, the members of the Allman Brothers displayed their creative genius and ignited further interest among fans, eager to eavesdrop on their well crafted tunes.

Then, trouble brewed again, as disagreements between bandmates ensued, and the band broke apart in 1976, only to rejoin two years later. They endured label difficulties and changing times and were forced to re-examine their sound. Fans needn’t have been worried, however, because after a long hiatus in the 1980s, the band formed together once more in the early 1990s and have been recording and touring since.

Progressive Metal

This metal music known as Progressive Metal has also been called “prog” metal. This is just another subgenre of heavy metal. Prog Metal Bands have some features from rock and jazz that are mixed into metal music. Powerful singing and guitar riffs from metal are still the main features. Jazz and Classical music inspires a lot of progressive metal bands. These two types of genres have been known to start the revolution of progressive metal. Where Progressive Metal Came From

Back in the 1960′s and 70′s in the beginning of Progressive metal. High Tide was one of the first metal bands to start mixing some of these other elements into their metal music. Rush and King Crimson started to experiment with their style of music and start to become a more progressive metal type band. There was a start for progressive metal, but it needed someone to push it to the next level. There were three bands that could do that. Queensryche, Fates Warning and Dream Theater all had their own ideas and inspiration for progressive metal These three bands really had some progressive rock influences that gave them a more edgy and extreme metal sound.

The Breakout

Progressive metal started to breakout in the community in the early 1990s. This was all because of Queensryche’s Silent Lucidity, which became a huge hit in stores, on the radio and on MTV. With this spike in popularity, this paved the way for more progressive bands to come out. This opened the doors for other bands like Ayreon, Threshold, Opeth, Pain of Salvation, Symphony X and Tool. All of these new progressive bands all had a different style and inspiration for their music.

New Styles and Trends

More and more bands started to go with this trend. This metal genre needs some new leaders and new styles of music. For the present time we have Conscience, Disillusion and Dark Suns. Most progressive metal bands have always looked up to Anathema, Pain of Salvation, Opeth, Green Carnation and Tool.

There is Progressive Death Metal, which bands like Opeth and King’s X are most popular for. Traditional progressive metal has more elements of when it was starting as a music genre. Bands like Symphony X, Devin Townsend and Shadown Gallery are known for this. There is a genre called jazz / fusion death metal where bands like Between the Buried and Me, Pestilence and Meshuggah have made it famous.

Progressive metal will continue to grow and become more advanced. New bands will continue to be featured, bring something new to the table for progressive metal. The music genre will continue to change and continue to be influenced by jazz, classical, thrash, metal and its own music. The metal community will also have progressive metal, giving the community some type of new and exciting genre of music.
